More than five thousand Christians from the Democratic Republic of the Congo participated in the Desperta África campaign by signing the petition initiated by Open Doors, which calls for concrete steps to address violence and persecution against Christians in sub-Saharan Africa. The mobilization took place in 38 churches of the Central Africa Evangelical Community (CECA) located in the eastern part of the country, less than a month after the initiative began on September 27, 2026.
Before signatures, local leaders attended seminars on preparation for persecution, organized by Open Doors partners. The meetings encouraged churches to reflect on their biblical responsibility to support persecuted Christians and advocate for those who cannot speak for themselves. The CECA pastor in charge, who requested anonymity for security reasons, urged congregations to devote a month to teaching on religious persecution.
The effort also included a commitment to promote the campaign via social networks and messaging groups. In one church, signatures were gathered during worship and prayer, turning the act into a collective testimony of solidarity. Official figures show about 4,800 physical signatures, with additional participants responding through the campaign’s QR Code.
