ContextAdra, an Iraqi Christian, lived in Baghdad with her family. After Saddam Hussein's fall, Christians in Iraq faced growing hostility. In 2014, persecution intensified, with frequent kidnappings and attacks. Adra feared for her daughters, especially 12-year-old Mariana, and kept them at home.
The TrialOne Sunday, Adra went with her daughters to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Salvation in Baghdad. During the service, four or five armed men stormed the church and opened fire. Adra and her daughters lay on the floor. As the terrorists shouted they would kill all Christians, Adra whispered to her daughters: 'Pretend you are dead'.
Faith and OutcomeDespite the terror, Adra kept her faith, praying silently. After the attack, which left dozens dead, she and her daughters survived. The family fled Iraq to escape death. Today, Adra lives as a refugee but still believes God protected them that day.
