Damaris

ContextDamaris is a Nigerian widow who lived in Jos, a city in Plateau State, where Christians and Muslims coexist in tension. In 2010, the region suffered attacks from the extremist group Boko Haram, which seeks to impose Islamic law and persecutes Christians. Damaris, a devoted Christian, lost her husband, a kind man who led prayer groups and was called 'pastor' by the community.

The TrialOn March 8, 2010, while Damaris was away from home, she heard rumors of an attack in the city. Upon returning, she found her sister with her husband's belongings β€” shoes, watch, and books β€” and learned he had been shot. Rushing to the hospital, she received the news that he did not survive. Damaris went into shock and wept bitterly, feeling that her life was over.

Faith and OutcomeIn the midst of grief, Damaris sought strength in her faith. She had dreams of her husband comforting her and of God questioning her sadness. She began attending church choir rehearsals, where she heard God speaking through the songs. Through prayer, fasting, and support from pastors, she found comfort in Romans 8:35, which asks 'who shall separate us from the love of Christ?'. Today, Damaris remains steadfast, caring for her children and trusting that nothing can separate her from divine love.
